My Thoughts on Ultra-Processed Foods (UPF) as a Women’s Health Nutritionist

As a women’s health nutritionist, I often find myself discussing the topic of ultra-processed foods (UPF) with my clients.


While it's essential to be mindful of our UPF consumption, I believe it's equally important to adopt a holistic perspective on our overall diet. 


Let’s explore why a zoomed-out approach is vital and how to cultivate a balanced relationship with food.


Understanding Ultra-Processed Foods


Ultra-processed foods are products that have undergone industrial processing, often containing additives, preservatives, and artificial ingredients. 


While we know that high consumption of UPF can have negative health effects, it’s crucial to recognise that not all UPF are created equal. Some are fortified with essential nutrients, making them beneficial for specific populations. For example, certain breakfast cereals may be enriched with vitamins and minerals that help fill dietary gaps, especially for those who struggle to meet their nutritional needs.


The Balance of Choices


It’s common to feel overwhelmed by the idea of "clean eating" and avoiding UPF entirely. However, overthinking your food choices can lead to stress and anxiety, which may be more detrimental to your health than the UPF here and there. Instead of fixating on eliminating every UPF from your diet, consider the bigger picture: your overall eating pattern. Your diet as a whole.


Emphasising Nutritional Density


Rather than getting bogged down by the specifics of what to avoid, I recommend focusing on what you can add to your meals to enhance their nutritional value. This could be as simple as:


  • Adding an extra portion of fruits or vegetables to your plate.

  • Sprinkling nuts and seeds over your meals for added fibre and healthy fats.

  • Incorporating whole grains or legumes to increase satiety and nutrient intake.


By emphasising the inclusion of nutrient-dense foods, you can create a balanced diet that supports your health without the stress of avoiding certain foods.


A Mindful Approach to Eating


While it’s perfectly reasonable to be conscious of your UPF intake, I encourage you to maintain a zoomed-out approach to your diet. Here are a few tips to help you cultivate a positive relationship with food:


  1. Practise Mindful Eating: Take the time to enjoy your meals and pay attention to your hunger and fullness cues. This can help reduce the tendency to overthink your choices.

  2. Focus on Variety: Ensure your meals include a variety of foods to provide a broad spectrum of nutrients. This not only enhances your diet but also keeps meals interesting.

  3. Allow Flexibility: It's okay to enjoy UPF in moderation. The key is to find a balance that works for you without the pressure of strict dietary rules.

  4. Shift Your Mindset: Instead of viewing certain foods as "bad," try to reframe your thinking to consider the overall context of your diet and how you feel after eating different foods.

In summary, while it's important to be aware of your UPF consumption, don’t let it overshadow the joy of eating. 


By focusing on enhancing your meals with nutrient-rich foods and adopting a balanced, mindful approach, you can nurture your health without unnecessary stress. Remember, it’s not about perfection; it’s about finding a sustainable way to nourish your body and enjoy your food.
